When summer arrives at the Mount Washington Tavern Sky Bar, so does that bar’s premier drink “ the frozen John Daly.” Named after the famed golfer, this frozen version of the cocktail has become one of the Tavern’s summertime hits.
When the Mount Washington Tavern first introduced the drink, it would take the bar one month to use up a case of sweet tea vodka, recalls bartender and manager Nate Flax. Now, they are lucky if two cases last a week.
Flax, who has a psychology degree from Towson University, first joined the popular restaurant and bar as a host. He can still recall when he first was thrown behind the bar. The tavern was a bartender short that evening and he was asked to fill in.
“I learned that if someone ordered a drink and I didn’t know how to make it, I would tell them we didn’t have an ingredient behind this bar. I would go to another one of Mt. Washington’s bars to supposedly get that ingredient and ask a bartender there how to make it.” Now, he knows how to mix almost anything.
Here is the recipe for the frozen John Daly. Serve it up for friends at a summer evening get-together.
