Simply Southern: With a Dash of Kosher Soul
Wimmer Publishing, hardcover, 2009, 240 pages, $34.99
Southern cooking, replete with ingredients such as lard, crawfish and shrimp, hardly seems kosher. However, that is about to change with the publication of a new kosher southern cookbook.
“Simply Southern: With a Dash of Kosher Soul” features 300 tested kosher recipes, culled from more than 1,500 responses received from Jewish families in the South. Find classics such as BBQ ribs, fried chicken and “pigs” in blankets wrapped in onion marmalade. In addition, the cookbook includes traditional Jewish fare with a Southern twist. Accompanying the recipes are stories about keeping kosher in the South.
Proceeds from cookbook sales will benefit Margolin Hebrew Academy in Memphis, Tenn.
