In case you are wondering… the overall response to our decision to print same sex announcements in the BALTIMORE JEWISH TIMES last week has been pretty quiet. We’ve gotten a number of very nice letters, emails, and phone calls from supporters. And, as expected, there are some who strongly disagree and voted with their feet and canceled their subscriptions, but only three of those so far.  Sometimes their words weren’t so nice. A few were down right offensive. Each received a short response from me saying that we understand but disagree and that we look forward to welcoming them back to the JEWISH TIMES family when they’re ready. I’ve also heard from a few Baltimore Jewish agencies that they’ve been getting calls complaining about the JT’s new editorial policy, even though we are an independent entity. Mr Buerger - Your comparison in the second to last paragraph in your blog is non-sensical. The two scenarios you picked bear no relationship to each other. And your use of the term Haredi has significant negative connotations which bring to question your objectivity in the matter.

Most of the people that I know in the observant community do not in any way, shape, or form condone the actions of child molesters. They are sick people and almost everyone I know would agree to that assessment. However, your choice to run simcha announcements regarding same sex couples may be allowed by SOME rabbis. There is no question regarding halacha and homosexuality so your statement regarding the legality of the relationship has to do with secular law.

In essence, you are mixing apples, oranges, and kiwis together and coming to the conclusion that it is ok for you to do what you are doing.  I personally do not care what people do in the privacy of their bedroom. But by doing what you have done, you are validating what many consider to be illegitimate and morally offensive. And by doing so, you have done what you stated you did not do. You have excluded a large population of Jews that live in Baltimore who feel that purchasing your paper makes them complicit in your actions.
