Back in February of 2010, I wrote an article about allegations that first appeared in the Washington Post that Rabbi Menachem Youlus – the Baltimore-based Judaica/bookstore operator known as the “Indiana Jones of Torah scribes” for his swashbuckling tales of rescuing Holocaust-era Torahs from Europe and other places – had fabricated his stories for profit. Frankly, over the years, I’ve dealt with a lot of head-in-the-sand attitudes in the local Jewish community. But this time, it felt different. People who commit fraud are crooks, even if they are rabbis.
People who abuse children are pedophiles, as well as crooks, even if they are rabbis.
People who lie, cheat and steal are crooks, no matter how many prayers they say or how many hechschers line their pantry shelves.  They cannot be excused because they are “mentchen” or have redeeming qualities.
Although none of us is perfect, we cannot hide criminal behavior behind public piety and expect to be forgiven.
Even if we are rabbis.
