Port Discovery Children’s Museum will host The Wizard of Oz Children’s Educational Exhibition from Jan. 26 to Sept. 15 in celebration of the film’s 70th anniversary milestone. The Laurel Museum, located at at 817 Main St. in Laurel, will host Stationed in Laurel: Our Civil War Story Exhibit from Feb. 3 to Dec. 22. The exhibit examines how the Civil War impacted the town. IHOP will host its National Pancake Day free pancake giveaway from & 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Music Box Series: Life in the Water will take place at 11:30 a.m. June 15 at the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, located at 1212 Cathedral Street in Baltimore.
The Music Box Series is a new concert series for the very young, aimed at babies 6 months to three years, and their families. Pianist Brian Ganz will bring his “Extreme Chopin” quest to perform all of Chopin’s works to Baltimore April 9. Columbia Festival of the Arts’  2013 season will kick-off with LakeFest, a free, three-day celebration of the arts, scheduled for June 14-16, along Lake Kittamaqundi’s lakefront in Columbia, MD.
Squonk Opera GO Roadshow will bring its unique and colorful musical experience to Columbia with multiple performances throughout LakeFest 2013. With a variety of musical performances on the main stage all weekend, Son Tropical of The United States Army Field Band will close LakeFest on Sunday evening with a snazzy repertoire of Afro-Cuban and Latin music. Along with musical performances there will be free, fun activities, including street performers, art exhibitions, a sidewalk chalk art competition, kids’ arts and crafts, assorted food offerings, wine tastings by Maryland Wineries, and a micro brew zone. In addition, LakeFest features ArtPark, a juried, invitational show where 60 artisans exhibit and sell their original artwork representing a breadth of media including functional and wearable art.
LakeFest is free to the public and will run from 5 to 11 p.m. June 14, noon to 11 p.m. june 15 and , noon - 7 p.m. June 17.

The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present Curious Tales of the Talmud: Finding Yourself in the Legends of Our Sages, the institute’s new six-session Spring 2013 course that will begin during the week of April 21. Rabbi Nochum Katsenelenbogen (Rabbi K.) of Chabad Owings Mills will conduct the six sessions on Tuesday evenings and/or Wednesday mornings at the Owings Mills Chabad Center.
In Curious Tales of the Talmud, participants will encounter legends of gargantuan sea monsters, impossible feats, anthropomorphisms, and riddles that challenge the foundations of the Jewish faith. In deciphering the meaning behind these strange episodes, students will discover secrets containing profound insights into the meaning of life. Like all JLI programs, Curious Tales of the Talmud is designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All JLI courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular synagogue, temple, or other house of worship.

Jewish Community Services of Howard County is offering a Community Bereavement Group for those who are mourning the death of a loved one.
The group will meet April 29, May 6 and 13, and June 3, 10, and 17, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm at the Jewish Federation in Howard County, Suite 401, Century Plaza 1000, 10630 Little Patuxent Parkway in Columbia. The group will provide a welcoming place where participants can be with others who are grieving, find support within the Jewish community, and benefit from the opportunity to talk with specialists about grief. Experience, experiment, and explore the science of how we can save Earth’s ecosystems at the Maryland Science Center’s new travelling exhibit, Wildlife Rescue, opening May 11. The exhibit will be on display until Labor Day.
Visitors to the exhibit will be introduced to the rescue efforts of people who dedicate their lives to the health of our planet’s habitats. Wildlife Rescue lets young rescuers experiment with puppets, costumes and the techniques used to teach animals survival skills, which often results in groups of animals or entire species being saved. In the exhibit, interactive activities such as crawling through a turtle culvert, comparing one’s weight to a panda’s and simulating flying with a Whooping Crane and feeding a baby California Condor give visitors a look at the important task of preserving Earth’s wildlife. Wildlife Rescue admission and activities are free with paid admission to the Maryland Science Center. The Maryland Science Center is located at 601 Light Street at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The Women Artists’ Forum will present its 16th Annual Spring Juried Exhibit at the Gallery Unicorn from May 19 to June 23. The juror, Kevin Raines, is a professor of art at the University of Notre Dame.  An opening reception will be held from 1:30 to 4 p.m. May 19.  All pieces of art are available for purchase and there will be print racks with additional artwork for sale.  The works, all created by women, will represent a broad range of artistic aesthetics and technical styles.  Included will be watercolor,oil,and acrylic paintings; photography; ceramics;encaustic;clay;pastel; and mixed media.  Admission is free and everyone is invited to come and view the artworks, meet the artists, browse the print racks, and enjoy refreshments.

BoardWalk Beat is a new, family-friendly, nightly 3D light and sound show that will debut on the famed Atlantic City Boardwalk on Saturday, May 25 at 9 p.m. “Boardwalk Beat” takes a foot-tapping, heart-thumping journey through eight decades of musical history including ‘20s Rag Time, ‘30s Cotton Club, ‘40s Broadway Musicals, ‘60s Surf Music, ‘70s Disco, ‘80s Pop and ‘90s Hard Rock. Historic Boardwalk Hall is magically transformed into a gigantic whimsical jukebox hopping randomly from one musical era to another.

BB&T Bank Presents “Brew at the Zoo,” the annual outdoor festival at The Maryland Zoo in Baltimore Mat the Waterfowl Lake Pavilion,May 25 to 26 from 1 to 7 p.m. each day. This fun, family-friendly event provides guests with the opportunity for unlimited sampling of a diverse assortment of local and national beers and wines, while absorbing some local live music. Opening May 25, the newest travelling exhibit, Sherlock Holmes and the Clocktower Mystery, will transport visitors back in time to Victorian London to solve this baffling thriller with the help of none other than the pipe-touting, hunting cap-wearing detective himself: the infamous Sherlock Holmes.

To get to the bottom of this “whodunit,” visitors’ deductive reasoning will be tested as they move through the eight “chapters” of the exhibit, aided by written guides complete with a map and space for recording clues and suspects. Visitors will learn the important process of thorough research based on logic as they work with physical evidence riddled throughout the exhibit – eventually leading to a dramatic finale.

Mom and Dad, I Have Something to Tell You is a documentary film about the journey parents are forced to take once their children tell them they are gay or lesbian. Until now documentaries about coming out of the closet have been from the point of view of the person taking that step, and for the first time we try to understand what happens to parents after their child tells them he/she is gay or lesbian.
​This sensitive and earnest film features and is narrated by Assi Azar, a rising TV star in Israel. His personal story unfolds, including the first heart to heart conversation between Assi and his parents since he came out when he was 24.

Jewish Federation of Howard County will celebrate Howard County’s modern family at its annual fundraising gala, “Federation Live!” with speaker Jeffrey Richman, Executive Producer of Modern Family, an ABC comedy. Solstice, the Maryland Science Center’s fundraising gala, marks its 36th year of science celebration on Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 8 p.m. to Midnight. The annual fundraising event will be decked out this year with a moveable feast, an always popular signature drink, live music and an evening of dancing.
All proceeds from Solstice support the Science Center’s long-standing policy of offering Maryland school groups free admission when visiting on field trips. Many reptile species are facing the threat of habitat loss and this is a R.A.D. day to come to the Zoo to learn about reptiles from our keepers! Guests will have the chance to see enrichment demos, ask the keepers questions and participate in some reptile themed activities.

Pioneer Camp, Secret and Spies
For those young scientists age 8-10, the National Electronics Museum, located at 1745 W. Nursery Rd. in Linthicum, is once again offering its summer Pioneer Camp.  This two-day camp will focus on the theme of Secrets and Spies. Campers will have the opportunity to explore the engineering and science behind becoming a secret agent.  Due to the popularity of Pioneer Camp, there are now two opportunities for campers to participate.  The first session is July 18-19, with another session being offered Aug. 15-16.  Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. each day, costs $40 per camper and advanced registration is required. Applications are being accepted for the 2013 Summer Teachers Institute, the annual, three-day workshop from July 29 to July 31, 2013 for area teachers, co-sponsored by the Baltimore Jewish Council and The Jewish Museum of Maryland. This year’s theme is Confronting Genocide: Heroism during the Holocaust. In addition to a trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to view the new exhibit, Some were Neighbor: Collaboration and Complicity during the Holocaust, the participants will hear a presentation by Wanda Urbanska, President of the Jan Karski Educational Foundation and receive a complimentary copy of Mr. Karski’s book, Story of a Secret State, written in 1944. Workshop participants are eligible for one MSDE credit.

Junior Achievement of Central Maryland (JA) is partnering with the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and Family Economics and Financial Education (FEFE) to host National Financial Educator Training for elementary, middle and high school teachers, July 30-Aug. 1, at Stevenson University. The sessions will offer training opportunities to help educators shape the way America’s youth think about money by providing interactive workshops led by current classroom educators who model lesson plan activities, creating networking opportunities for discussions about best practices within the classroom, connecting participants with industry and university experts as they discuss cutting-edge research and trends, and offer an abundance of ready-to-teach curriculum materials designed by educators.
