Adam Sandler continues to strike gold. His latest mindless hit flick, “Grown Ups,” is raking in the dough and, more importantly, generating a lot of buzz around Tinseltown for its Razzie Awards potential.
Roger Ebert called “Grown Ups”—which co-stars Kevin James, Salma Hayek, David Spade, Maya Rudolph, Chris Rock and Rob Schneider—“a pleasant, genial, good-hearted, sometimes icky comedy that’s like spending a weekend with well-meaning people you don’t want to see again any time real soon.” Stephen Holden of the New York Times was less sanguine: “It doesn’t get worse than ‘Grown Ups,’ Adam Sandler’s sloppy entry into this year’s man-child-comedy sweepstakes. Lazy, mean-spirited, incoherent, infantile and, above all, witless.”
Still, bets are on that “Grown Ups” won’t slip by the good folks at the Razzies. After all, Mr. Sandler himself has garnered six worst actor nominations (and won in ’99 for “Big Daddy”). He also has received two worst screenplay nominations.
Recently on “The Daily Show” with Jon Stewart, Mr. Sandler and Mr. Rock schmoozed a bit about Mr. Spade and Mr. Schneider. Of the latter, Mr. Stewart said he always felt that the Filipino-Jewish comedian would not age well. “He was gonna go Yoda-y very quickly,” he said, to which Mr. Rock responded, “It takes all the effort he has to look as bad as he looks right now.”
Going solo on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Mr. Sandler reminisced about his days with Chris Rock on “The Cosby Show.” Mr. Rock was warming up the audience during a pre-taping show, he recalled, and was doing quite well until he said, “And what’s with this Bill Cosby? Mushmouth—the most racist character.”
Needless to say, Mr. Cosby wasn’t too pleased, according to Mr. Sandler, and said, “Not in my house.” Rock was asked not to return to the set.
