Alexa Ray Joel says her mom, supermodel (and still gorgeous) Christie Brinkley, wishes that she looked like her only daughter (whom many people think looks like her famous dad, Billy Joel)
“Nobody is more supportive of my physical appearance than [Ms. Brinkley],” said the 24-year-old singer. “She tells me – which I don’t understand – that she wishes she looked like me, that I’m so much more unique than her.”
Alexa Ray has been on a rough road lately. She made headlines last December when a battle with depression led to an overdose.
“I felt like I was in a black hole and I couldn’t see out,” she told People. “I hit rock bottom that day. … A part of me wanted people close to me to know – not the whole world.”
At the time, tabloids reported that Alexa Ray was sparring with her exercise fanatic mom about her weight, leading to the overdose. Not true, she insists. She says she was still licking her wounds from a break-up with her first love, Jimmy Riot, her former bassist, whom she’d been dating since age 19.
“I was addicted to this man,” she says, “and it spiraled out of control. … It had everything to do with my depression, my anxiety, a dysfunctional on-and-off relationship with my ex – nothing to do with my relationship with either one of my parents.”
Meanwhile, Alexa Ray will soon be appearing as a model in Prell shampoo TV commercials – a quarter-century after her mom did the same darned thing. She also has a new album coming out in June.
“It’s hard because [people] compare my music to my father and my looks to my mother,” she says. “And I like to think that my music and my voice are different than my father’s and my look is very different than my mother’s. Can’t I just be me?”
