The death last week of legendary broadcast journalist Ted Koppel’s son, Andrew, put a spotlight on the dangers of binge drinking.
Andrew Koppel’s lifeless body was discovered after a daylong drinking binge with a stranger that he met at a tavern in New York’s Hells Kitchen neighborhood.
Andrew, 40, was a former lawyer for the New York Housing Authority who struggled with alcohol abuse throughout his life. He and his partner, Ilona Lieberman, have a 2-year-old daughter. Ms. Lieberman is pregnant with their second child
“Our son, Andrew, was a brilliant, caring man whose loss we will mourn for the rest of our lives,” Ted Koppel, 70, said in a statement on behalf of himself and his wife, attorney Grace Anne Dorney Koppel.
“This has been a devastating tragedy for our family,” Ms. Lieberman said in a statement read by her sister, Michelle, outside their family’s home in Rockaway Beach, N.Y. “We will always remember Andrew as a generous, loving and compassionate father, partner, and friend. Our family grieves enormously.”
At press time, Andrew’s cause of death remained unclear, pending the results of toxicology and tissue testing, according to a spokeswoman for the city’s medical examiner.
Andrew was the third of Ted Koppel’s four children.
