It only makes perfect sense—Barbra Streisand as Rose, the ultimate stage mother, in a revival of the musical “Gypsy.” The 68-year-old singer/actress/director recently met with Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents to discuss playing the role in a film version of their 1959 show.
Babs has reportedly been interested in doing “Gypsy” for years, but Mr. Laurents said, “Now things are serious and a movie is truly in the works.” He said that he had suggested Tom Hanks to play the role of Herbie, Rose’s love interest and talent manager of her two daughters. “Barbra loved the idea,” Mr. Laurents said.
When asked if Streisand is too long in the tooth for the part, Mr. Laurents, 92, said, “First of all, they can do magic in Hollywood. Second, does it really matter?”
He’s got a point.
