Ben Harper will be among the guest vocalists who will perform on INXS’s first album in five years, a “re-imagining” of their classic hits (“What You Need,” “Suicide Blonde,” “Never Tear Us Apart”) with different arrangements and singers. Other vocalists for the still-untitled CD, which is slated for a May release, are Rob Thomas and Brandon Flowers of the Killers.
For his selection, Mr. Harper, 40, sang “Devil Inside” when INXS were in L.A. before Christmas.
“Everyone who sings on the stuff has their own style, their own take on things, and that’s why it’s so wonderful,” said lead guitarist Tim Farriss.
INXS will record another original studio album in the near future, but this new one is “a transitional step,” Mr. Farriss said.
“We wanted to use to some of our existing songs,” he said, “and invite and integrate some well-known singers and very experienced and seasoned singers, friends of ours, and some up-and-coming artists, and just make it a collaboration of getting INXS to be involved in all sorts of things — and using the original material as the focal point.”
