In a lot of ways, becoming a cheesy TV game show host is a smart and natural progression for Carnie Wilson.
After all, the 40-year-old daughter of Beach Boy genius Brian Wilson and singer Marilyn Wilson-Rutherford first came to the public’s attention as a singer with the cheesy pop trio Wilson Phillips (with sister Wendy and Chynna Phillips). Then, she became a cheesy tabloid TV talk show host, and then she became a cheesy poster child for gastric bypass surgery (and later did a cheesy nude pictorial for Playboy showing off her new body). She also did a cheesy turn on VH1’s “Celebrity Fit Club.”
But where does this cheesy, ‘now-she’s-fat-now-she-ain’t’ gal have the uber-chutzpah to think that she can step into the shoes of the great Bob Eubanks?!
Nonetheless, Ms. Wilson will host 40 episodes of a new GSN edition of “The Newlywed Game,” testing relatively dim-witted wedded couples on their knowledge base about the simplest things about their mates. The original show, hosted by Mr. Eubanks and produced by Chuck Barris, debuted in 1966 and ran for more than two decades.
“I’ve always loved game shows,” gushed Ms. Wilson, who began co-hosting the “GSN Live” interactive game show last year. “My personality and energy [are] perfect for something like this. First of all, I’m married, and I loved watching ‘The Newlywed Game’ when I was younger. I watched it all the time. I always hoped the couples would start fighting.”
The show premieres April 6. Let’s hope Carnie never uses Mr. Eubanks’ immortal catch-phrase, “Makin’ whoopee.”
