The music world mourned the passing yesterday of rock producer/song publisher Don Kirshner, the celebrated “Man With The Golden Ear,” who died in Boca Raton from heart failure at age 76.
Over the past half-century, the Bronx-born, seemingly rather wooden Kirshner – who was so memorably lampooned by Paul Shaffer on “SNL” – was responsible for a great deal of our favorite music. Among his contributions to pop culture were the great Bobby Darin, the Monkees and the Archies, as well as the rock band Kansas.
Kirshner also represented some of the great “Brill Building” talents, including Neil Sedaka, Carole King, Barry Mann, Howard Greenfield, Cynthia Weil and Gerry Goffin.
Perhaps most of all, he’ll be remembered for his popular TV show “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert,” which ran from 1973 to 1981 and featured everyone from the Rolling Stones, KISS and Black Sabbath to the Allman Brothers, the Ramones and the Steve Miller Band.
