A musical based on the hit comedy film “Groundhog Day”? Well, only if Bill Murray, in his lounge singer alter ego, gets to sing in it.
It might sound like a wacky idea but Harold Ramis, director and co-writer of the 1993 movie starring Mr. Murray and Andie MacDowell, recently told MTV News that plans are moving forward to stage a “GD” musical.
“Danny Rubin, who wrote the original script, has been working on a book for a musical,” Mr. Ramis said.
Funny thing is, this ain’t a new idea. About five years ago, celebrated Broadway lyricist and composer Stephen Sondheim reportedly said he wanted to work on a stage adaptation of “Groundhog Day.” (You might recall that the flick involves a curmudgeonly meteorologist who is destined live the same day over and over again in Punxsutawney, Pa., until he gets it morally, ethically and karmicly correct. Does that scream show tunes to you?)
But will the brilliant Sondheim (“Sweeney Todd,” “A Little Night Music,” “West Side Story,” “Gypsy,” etc.) really be involved in the project? “I don’t know,” Mr. Ramis said. “I like that he took it that seriously.”
OK, Harold, so what’s next – “Stripes: The Musical”? Twyla Tharp’s interpretation of “Ghostbusters II”?
