Winner or whiner? Cool guy or kvetcher? It’s your call, but James Franco still won’t take the rap for his demonstration of lethargy and inertia as co-host of the most recent Oscars telecast with that delicate flower of perkiness, Miss Anne Hathaway (not to be confused with Miss Jane Hathaway, aka Nancy Kulp, of “Beverly Hillbillies” fame.)
“As far as having low energy or seeming as though I wasn’t into it or was too cool for it,” he tells Playboy, “I thought, `OK, Anne is going the enthusiastic route.’ I’ve been trained as an actor to respond to circumstances, to the people I’m working with, and not to force anything. So I thought I would be the straight man and she could be the other, and that’s how I was trying to do those lines.
“I felt kind of trapped in that material,” he says. “I felt, `This is not my boat. I’m just a passenger, but I’m going down and there’s no way out.’” (Couldn’t he have just blamed it on low blood sugar?)
For her part, Hathaway recently said of the Oscars in Harper’s Bazaar, “In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
Sounds like she took the classy route.
Pay attention, Jimbo.
