For his next big role, the talented-yet-quirky Joaquin Phoenix—who’s been known to look like a mad Chasidic Jew at times—may turn to religion.
Entertainment Weekly recently confirmed that Phoenix, 36, has spoken with writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson about a bio flick loosely based on the founding of Scientology. The film tells the story of a charismatic leader who creates a new religion in the 1950s.
If the deal goes through, Phoenix would play his main disciple, an alcoholic drifter who becomes the leader’s closest follower, only to later break away from him.
