Josh Schwartz
Whose ‘Bright’ Idea Was This, Anyway?
April 17, 2009
Remember the late ’80s flick, “Bright Lights, Big City”? Right, we barely remember it, too, except that Michael J. Fox (not to mention his future wife, Tracy Pollan , and Phoebe Cates ) was in it. Not one of Michael’s best movies. (BTW, did you know Mr. Fox attends a Reform temple in Manhattan with his wife and their four kids?)
Nonetheless, the lukewarm critical reaction to the Reagan era “Bright Lights” is not stopping Josh Schwartz from giving a new movie adaptation of Jay McInerney’s novel another go, according to Variety.
Mr. Schwartz, 32, the wunderkind producer behind such wildly popular TV shows as “Chuck,” “Gossip Girl” and “The O.C.,” will make his feature film directorial debut with the new “BL,BC.”
Mr. Schwartz said that he is not sure yet whether he will leave the story in its original time period or bring it up to date.
You may recall that the story revolves around a New York City fast-lane magazine writer who indulges in myriad substances to get through his angst-filled life. Let’s hope audiences won’t also have to get properly looped to get through Mr. Schwartz’s incarnation of “Bright Lights.”
