Lady Gaga
Blonde Invasion
August 31, 2009
Israelis know plenty about ga-ga, which is the name of their quirky version of dodgeball. But now, they also know plenty about Lady Gaga, the international pop star and Madonna wannabe who recently performed in the Holy Land.
Because of Israel’s spiritual ambience, Lady Gaga – born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta in Yonkers, N.Y.—reportedly toned down her characteristically risqué image during her first-ever concerts in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
Translation: at a press conference, she covered her flimsy top with a black leather jacket featuring a Star of David made of silver spikes on the back. Nonetheless, at her concerts, she spent most of the time onstage half-nekkid. (So much for spirituality.)
Interestingly, for her biggest hit, “Poker Face,” Gaga, 23, offered two versions – an acoustic one featuring a long, drawn-out story of how she “did it” while covered in Dead Sea mud, and then an electric version.
Meanwhile, Gaga’s apparent idol, the “Material Girl” herself, visited the Western Wall earlier this week, wearing high heels, blue jeans and a black jacket. Appropriately, Madonna was accompanied by Jesus – no, not the famous one but her hunky Brazilian beau, Jesus Luz—and several bodyguards.
Madge gave two concerts in Tel Aviv this week as part of her “Sticky and Sweet” tour, as well as attended a kabbalah confab. She previously visited Israel in 2004 and 2007.
