No doubt about it, Lainie Kazan is probably everyone’s favorite stereotypical Jewish mother. And when something works, why mess with it?
In Evegny Afineevsky’s upcoming film “Oy Vey! My Son Is Gay!” Ms. Kazan, 69, plays Shirley Hirsch, a Lawnguyland mama who is constantly foisting nice Jewish goils on her unmarried son, Nelson, until discovering that he’s dating a nice Italian-American fella.
“It’s about the clash of generations, and parents trying to understand their children,” the Israeli-born Mr. Afineevsky told The Jewish Daily Forward. “Sure, the parents are living and doing modern things, but at same time they are a couple of generations back.”
The laff-riot heats up when Lainie and her poor husband attempt to get their neighbor, Sybil (played by buxom Carmen Electra), to steer their son to the hetero highway. They also take poor Nelson to a head-shrinker, to figure out what “turned him gay.”
“It’s a love story,” said Mr. Afineevsky. “Love is love, no matter what. Any parent can have a gay son, or a son who falls in love with someone from another nation.”
And nu, why the Jewish angle? “Because the Jewish piece gives you more of an opportunity to make more fun,” he said. Gotcha.
