Everyone knows that Liz Taylor was so breathtakingly gorgeous in her day, and most people have heard that she converted to Judaism. But in their new book “Furious Love,” Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger claim “La Liz” and hubby (no. 5 and 6) Richard Burton once quarreled over Judaism.
No, the great, late Welsh actor was no anti-Semite. But in the book, Kashner and Schoenberger write that Liz called the Welsh “the Jews of Britain” during a public spat (because of their outsider status in the UK).
“You’re not Jewish at all,” Burton reportedly shot back. “If there’s any Jew in this family, it’s me!”
Undaunted, Taylor screamed, “I am Jewish, and you can [expletive] off!”
Liz converted to Judaism at age 27. While some say she did it to marry her third husband, producer Mike Todd (aka Avrom Hirsch Goldbogen), Taylor, now 78, insists that she’d always been interested in Judaism. (After Todd, you may recall that she famously married Jewish crooner Eddie Fisher, much to Debbie Reynolds’ dismay.)
