Brothers and sisters have a tendency to tease each other mercilessly, even when they get older. But thespian sibs Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal obviously have a pretty good thing going.
It was recently revealed that Jake, 29, offered his big sister some good advice on her first Academy Award nomination.
“He said, `It’s a lot of fun, and enjoy it in that spirit. If you make it too much more than that, you’ll probably go astray,’” Maggie, 32, said about Jake, who as you’ll recall was nominated for his role in 2005’s “Brokeback Mountain.” (Commence flashback flinching, straight guys out there who saw it.)
Maggie, 32, is up for best supporting actress this year for her role in “Crazy Heart,” co-starring the great, great Jeff Bridges.
“My phone started ringing at 5 o’clock in the morning, and there’s that first batch of phone calls from people who are up that early in the morning,” Maggie recalled. “I remember [Jake] looked at me and said, `Your phone is going to be like that all day.’ It was true.
“I thought about going to sleep after that first 5 o’clock rush of calls, and he said, `Don’t go to sleep. Who knows when this will happen again? Stay up. Have some coffee.’”
BTW, Jake and Maggie are only the ninth pair of sibs to be nominated for the Oscars. The others? Ethel and Lionel Barrymore, Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine, Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave, Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty, Jane and Peter Fonda; Julia and Eric Roberts, Meg and Jennifer Tilly, and River and Joaquin Phoenix.
This year’s Oscar telecast will be presented Sunday, Mar. 7.
