We bid farewell to wrestling legend Randy “Macho Man” Savage, who died recently at age 57 on May 20 in a one-car accident in Florida.
Savage — who was born Randy Poffo — was born in Columbus, Oh., to an Italian father and Jewish mother. (Who knew?!)
Before wrestling, Savage played minor league baseball for five years in the St. Louis Cardinals, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago White Sox systems.
He climbed the ranks of regional pro wrestling circuits until making it to the World Wrestling Federation in ‘85 and receiving national TV exposure. A colorful personality, he teamed with and battled most of the big-name wrestlers of that time period as pro wrestling grew into a big, big business.
