It goes without saying that Susan Downey is a good sport. At the recent Golden Globes Awards ceremony, the film producer’s husband, actor Robert Downey Jr., managed to mention his spouse in his acceptance speech, but in a decidedly offbeat way.
“I would like to thank Susan Downey for telling me that Matt Damon was going to win so don’t bother to prepare a speech,” said Mr. Downey, 45, who won the best comedy actor award for his role in “Sherlock Holmes.”
The actor mentioned several people he would not be able to thank due to his lack of preparation. “I really don’t want to thank my wife,” he said, “because I could be bussing tables at the Daily Grill right now if not for her.”
Mr. Downey alluded to his very public drug-related problems in the past when he paid tribute to “Sherlock’s” co-producer. “What am I going to do, thank Joel Silver? The guy’s only restarted my career 12 times since I started 25 years ago,” he said.
Ms. Downey, 36, who also co-produced “Sherlock,” took her hubby’s jibes in stride.
“I know he didn’t have [a speech] fully prepared, but he is really good off the cuff, and he actually tends to do better when he doesn’t plan things,” she said after the ceremony. “It’s great for him [to receive the award], it’s great for the movie, and we worked, as he said, really hard, so it’s so nice to have him have this recognition.”
