Back in ’99, Sam Mendes turned a lot of heads with his brilliant debut film, the Academy Award-winning “American Beauty.” Now, the 43-year-old English director is once again exploring contemporary American angst and alienation with “Away We Go,” with John Krasinski (of “The Office”) and Maya Rudolph (of “Saturday Night Live”).
“Away We Go,” which comes out next month, chronicles the journey of one young married couple across America searching for the perfect place to raise a family. (Don’t think Charm City is on the list.)
The film also stars Jeff Daniels, Carmen Ejogo, Jim Gaffigan, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Josh Hamilton, Allison Janney, Melanie Lynskey, Chris Messina, Catherine O’Hara, and Paul Schneider. (Interestingly, not in the film are Mr. Mendes’ lovely wife, Kate Winslet, or his sexy ex-girlfriend, Rachel Weisz.)
The film is set to open the Edinburgh Film Festival in late June.
