Adorable, smoky-voiced Vered “Didi” Benami might be a pretty good singer (and a heckuva waitress), but does she have what it takes to be the next “American Idol”?
Ms. Benami — a 22-year-old New York native and daughter of Israelis who was raised in good ol’ Knoxville, Tenn., and now lives in L.A. — last week made the “Top 24” on “Idol,” thus clearing the first round on the wildly popular Fox program. She even earned some praise from uber-judge Simon Cowell (no small feat).
Ms. Benami and her fellow contestants will now move on to the next round of competition, but it should be noted that no less than Entertainment Weekly ranked her third among all of the performers in “Idol’s” initial round of auditions.
BTW, on her MySpace page, Ms. Benami proclaims her “faith that someday there will be peace in Israel.” (From your lips to God’s ears, Didi.)
Didi follows in the footsteps of Elliott Yamim, another American Jew of Israeli background, who placed third on “Idol’s” fifth season.
