It is always around this time of year, when I am putting together all of my receipts for charitable donation and other business expenses that I am reminded just how much I hate paying taxes. Please understand, I really like my accountant. He is a really good guy. I would love to go to an Orioles or Ravens game with him. But the hour or so that I sit in his office going over K-1’s, 1040’s, 1099’s, and charitable receipts is painful and reminds me of just how over-taxed I feel. What really ticks me off is liberals like Joe Biden pontificating on how it is patriotic to pay taxes. Certainly for Joe it is, because he gives almost nothing away in charity. And the really funny thing is that the breakdown of charity when comparing liberals to conservatives… read more

Mr. Weiss - here are a couple of articles regarding charitable donations conservative vs liberal

The above is written by a self identifying liberal at the NY Times.

This is just a small sample. In fact, there is an entire book about the subject called “Who Really Cares by Arthur C. Brooks a self proclaimed independent whose expertise in in social science.

Here is your data Mr. Weiss.

You may well be correct about what the Obama’s contributed this past year vs Newt. But if you look back in their past before the Presidency the Obama’s overall charitable contributions did not come close to 10%. The “scientific data” was an article out of the Wall Street Journal which specifically looked at charitable giving comparing self described conservatives and liberals and is not anecdotal in regards to Mr. Biden.  It should be available on line because it is within the last 6 months or so. Whether or not you believe what is written in the WSJ is a different issue. But this has been studied a number of times.

And yes, Pirkei Avos quotes that exact line. But I believe that there is a difference between the “lot” that is given you by Hashem and what the government decides arbitrarily to take from you. Thanks for bringing it up though. It is often hard in the daily rat race to remember those sayings which are simple yet incredibly logical.

Since you brought up Pirkei Avos,  in Chapter 1 verse 7 Nittai of Arbel taught, “Stay away from a bad neighbor and do not be friends with a bad person.” So since we are quoting Avos perhaps we should look at the Mr. Obama’s list of close friends such as Jeremiah Wright, Bernadine Dorne, Bill Ayers, Derrick Bell, and Michael Pfleger. Sorry to bounce off topic, but I thought it was pertinent since you brought in Pirkei Avot.

I appreciate your comments. Thanks for taking the time to respond.

And, by the way, the Obamas contributed 14.3% of their income in 2010 to charities, and the Gingriches only 2.6%.

The whole story is a better story.

1) “Most liberals give almost nothing in charity, while most conservatives have significant charitable deductions.”
Do you have any scientific evidence to support this statement? What Biden does is an anecdote, and an anecdote is not data.
2)“We turn age 50, look around, and see that despite trying our best we’ll never be “rich,” whatever that means.”  You don’t know what “rich” means? Look at Pirkei Avot.  Who is rich? One who is satisfied with his portion.
