Rosh Hashanah literally means “head of the year,” celebrating the birth of Creation. It is a time for reflection and anticipation of renewal and fresh beginnings. My holiday table is transformed into a banquet of symbolic foods, starting with something sweet, either dipping challah or apple slices in assorted flavored honey.

The entrée is a traditional menu item but when it comes to the other dishes, I like to be more contemporary. Every year I look for ways to put my own twist on family favorites. For instance, someone recently suggested adding tender pieces of cooked or grilled eggplant to kasha instead of bow ties. Another woman layers her noodle kugel like lasagna, with two layers of kugel and two layers of apricot-pineapple preserves.

A wonderful meal can enrich the meaning of Rosh Hashanah. Each dish can bring to life the story of our family’s culinary past, present and future. L’shana tova to all.
