I am still in awe after attending a vigil for Milton Hill. This honest and hardworking man was a church volunteer at The Ark Church on North Avenue.
He was found Friday, July 30, shot to death on the church steps. Hundreds of angry people gathered on the street in front of the church and declared, “We’ve had enough.” Black and white religious leaders joined hands and proclaimed that the good people of Baltimore’s inner city are sick and tired of suffering at the hands of a few people who have no reverence for life.
As a Jewish community, it is our moral responsibility to stand up and respond when good people need our help. A heart that is closed to our brothers and sisters is surely closed to Hashem. Our hearts must be broken for those in our city who fear for the lives of their families. Let us walk a Godly path and heed the call to action.
If we can raise money for scholarships to help a few hard working underprivileged Baltimore children attend college, we will have made a difference. If each of our shuls adopt a ruined park in Baltimore and fix it in partnership with local churches we will have improved the lives of children who are literally dying for our help.
