Afterthoughts
September 18, 2009The Sept. 4 article “Reading, Writing And Roommates” by Brandon Chiat highlights the contrast in colleges’ emphasis on book learning versus life lessons. Learning to live with others carries through our entire life and perhaps is more important than what we may retain from any particular mathematics, history or science course.
The typical university housing office is preoccupied with meeting bedding capacity needs and (critical) life safety concerns. Creating truly nurturing, psychologically safe environments and imparting meaningful lessons of tolerance, mutual respect of others, their “space” and possessions, as well as simple kindness, heightened sensitivity and consideration for fellow roommates all too often are mere afterthoughts.
