Anti-Ahmadinejad

October 9, 2009

I am a senior at Beth Tfiloh and many of my classmates recently went to Washington D.C. to protest Ahmadinejad and his speaking at the United Nations.

We spent many class periods discussing what exactly we would be protesting and learning about the Iranian policies. In your recent article “Groups Set to Confront Ahmadinejad as U.S. Agrees to Talks” at jewishtimes.com you discussed the purpose of the Stand for Freedom in Iran Rally. The article made it seem that the rally was mainly for demanding “an end to all uranium enrichment in Iran.”

In reality, most groups that participated in this protest were there for the human rights aspect. This rally was mainly for the freedom of the Iranian people, giving it the title “Stand for Freedom in Iran.” Some groups went to protest on behalf of women’s rights. Others went to protest the lack of freedom of religion and others went to protest the lack of freedom of speech. Some groups protested for all of the issues.

Your article would have been more interesting if you discussed the human rights issues more than the uranium crisis. After all, the protest is mainly for the protection of the Iranians and their rights. The policies presented by President Ahmadinejad are absolutely outrageous such as executing juvenile offenders, executing homosexuals and using torture methods to get detainees to confess falsely.
