Having grown-up in the Baltimore Jewish community, I take pride in the uncommonly high interest and concern that Jews take in issues of social justice and public health. So I was surprised about the general lack of attention paid to a very important bill currently being drafted in the US Congress called the Kid-Safe Chemical Act.
The bill will make sure that chemical companies prove their chemicals are safe before they enter our homes. Under the current system, consumers and especially children who are the most vulnerable, face the risk of exposure to toxic chemicals because as of now chemicals are assumed safe until proven otherwise.
The Kid-Safe Chemical Act requires chemical companies to take proactive responsibility for the health consequences of the chemicals they produce and is a major step towards protecting human health and encouraging ethical business practices. These goals are very much in line with Jewish values and very worthy of the Jewish community’s support.
