Move On

September 11, 2009

It is time to move on to more important matters and let Jon Cardin get back to representing us in the House of Delegates (“Cardin: Debt Paid,” Sept. 4).

By now I believe that it is the consensus of the public that Jon made an error in judgment in deciding how and when to propose marriage. Whether the reporting of the original incident was accurate or overblown, Jon has taken responsibility, apologized multiple times and has paid the Baltimore City Police Department for the wages of the officers for the few minutes of their involvement.

Contrary to the opinion of Dr. Alfred Katz (“Shame On Cardin,” Aug. 28), we voters have often elected people whose private conduct was questionable, but whose leadership was outstanding. At least a few Presidents of the United States (FDR, JFK and Bill Clinton may top the list) led personal lives that many found offensive. Yet their leadership of the country was stellar.

It was my pleasure to serve on the board of the Baltimore Hebrew University (BHU) with Jon. I serve currently on the committee, chaired by Jon, charged with guiding the transition of BHU to the Baltimore Hebrew Institute at Towson University. Jon’s dedication, diligence and responsiveness to constituents make him exactly the kind of person whom I want to represent me in government.

Calling for Jon’s resignation is short-sighted and out of proportion. Losing Jon’s leadership and voice in elective office would be a terrible waste of talent, and, personally, I look forward to watching his career in public service for many years to come.

Jonathan Lowenberg
Chair, Board of Trustees
