Profound
September 11, 2009I was incredibly moved by the story on the upcoming healing service for abuse victims (“Service Of Healing,” Aug. 28). Time and again, Phil Jacobs and the JEWISH TIMES have served as the conscious of our community—refusing to let us run away from realities that we’d rather deny exist in our community. Instead, despite often relentless criticism, Jacobs has continued to write about these issues, and helped to be part of the solution.
I thank the Board of Rabbis for the profound open letter to the community on the subject of abuse, and for their willingness to engage in this very sensitive issue. By taking a position on this issue, and co-sponsoring the service with the Associated (which has toiled diligently and without fanfare on this issue for over a decade through CHANA and the Shofar Coalition), the rabbis of the Board are sending a very serious warning message to predators and giving a significant opportunity for healing to victims—and for that we should all be grateful. I know I am.
