Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered Israel’s justice minister to redraft the loyalty oath amendment to include Jews.
Netanyahu on Monday said the new amendment to the Citizenship Act, which requires a pledge of allegiance by non-Jews to the Jewish and democratic state of Israel, should include Jews seeking Israeli citizenship under the Law of Return.
The amendment approved by Netanyahu’s Cabinet last week applied only to non-Jews seeking Israeli citizenship. Human rights groups and political organizations, in Israel and abroad, have slammed the amendment as racist.
Justice Minister Yaakov Ne’eman had made a similar proposal to his own amendment during the Cabinet debate.
Two Israelis to Receive U.S. Science Medal
Two Israeli scientists have been chosen to receive the U.S. National Medal of Science.
Yakir Aharonov and Amnon Yariv will be among 10 scientists to receive the award from President Obama at a mid-November ceremony at the White House for their outstanding contributions to the field.
Aharonov, 78, a quantum physicist, is an emeritus professor at Tel Aviv University and a professor at Chapman University in California. He discovered the Aharonov-Bohm effect with physicist David Bohm that describes how particles are influenced by forces far removed from them.
Yariv, who specializes in electro-optics, serves on the faculty of the California Institute of Technology.
Israeli Soldier Jailed for Stealing from Marmara
An Israeli soldier who stole electronic equipment from an intercepted ship bound for Gaza was sentenced to jail.
The soldier was sentenced under a plea bargain Monday by an Israeli military court to five months in jail. He also was fined and demoted for removing the items from the Mavi Marmara ship, which Israeli commandos boarded on May 31. Violent resistance on the Turkish ship led to the deaths of nine Turkish nationals, including a dual Turkish-American citizen.
The soldier, who also was removed from an officers training course, reportedly stole the items—a laptop computer, camera lenses and a compass—while the ship was docked in the Israeli port at Ashdod.
In court, the soldier expressed remorse for his actions and apologized.
Three other soldiers are to be brought to trial for the looting incident, according to Ynet.
