Ashkelon, Israel

A delegation from Baltimore’s Congregation Beth El Baltimore visited its sister synagogue, Kehillat Netzach in Ashkelon, during its recent trip to the Jewish state.

Senior Rabbi Steven Schwartz, Education Director Dr. Eyal Bor and 34 other participants spent time with the Conservative synagogue.

Kehillat Netzach is the the only Masorti/Conservative Synagogue in the area. It is located about 15 minutes from the Gaza border and has 300 member families.  The congregation is twinned with Congregation Beth El, just as the Baltimore Jewish community and Ashkelon have a sister city relationship through the Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.

This past year, Congregations Beth El and Kehillat Netzach teamed up with Ashkelon’s Arts and Music School to produce a Children’s Megillah. For the project, the children representing all three operations learned about Purim at the same time. The Beth El children and the children in the Art School each drew nine panels representing the Purime story.  The Megillah was then written by Kehillat Netzach’s Rabbi Gustavo Surazski.

The Megillah is now on display at Beth El and the congregations look forward to more projects together in the coming years.
