Rabbi Heshie Klein, 48, has been named possibly Baltimore’s first ever Orthodox Jewish Police Chaplain.
Rabbi Klein received his appointment Wednesday from Deputy Major Justin Reynolds at a ceremony held at the Police and Fire Training Academy.
“I’m excited with the anticipation of the responsibility,” said Mr. Klein, the father of eight children and grandfather of three.
“My job will be to help the city police officers who are Jewish. I view this is as an opportunity to help our community as a connection to the City Police Department.”
“I’m excited that he’s on board,” said Mr. Reynolds. “I can’t wait to work with him.”
Mr. Klein, an Upper Park Heights resident, is a long-time member of Shomrim, the all-volunteer public safety organization.
“Once again this demonstrates to the Jewish community that City Hall and the police department is responsive to the needs of the Jewish community and understands it is part and parcel of the city experience,” said Shomrim general counsel Nathan Willner. “Heshie Klein has demonstrated his ability to build bridges and work within and out of our Jewish community.”
Mr. Reynolds said that Mr. Klein will help officers who are in distress, who need someone to talk to “when you see constant death and violence.”
The chaplain, he added, acts as a liaison between the community and the Baltimore City Police Department.
