The officers, board and staff of the American Technion Society (ATS) mourn the loss of our dear friend Philip E. Klein.
From Baltimore, his more than 40 years of unyielding service to and staunch support of our organization, the Technion and the Baltimore Jewish community have been sources of great inspiration.
Mr. Klein, affectionately known in Baltimore and Israel as “Mr. Technion,” was past president and honorary chairman of the ATS Baltimore Chapter Board. He was also a life trustee of the ATS National Board of Regents, served on the Technion Board of Governors, and was a regular participant on ATS missions to Israel and the Technion.
His strong belief that Israel’s success was dependent upon the strength of the Technion was characterized by his major support of every Baltimore Chapter project, including the Baltimore Center for Research Engineering, the Baltimore Double Module Dormitory, the Baltimore “Utilization of Dry Desert Air” Project, the Dusty Klein Memorial Scholarship Fund (named in honor of his late granddaughter), the Louis and Bessie Stein Biotechnology and Food Engineering Complex, and most recently, the Philip E. Klein Perpetual Fellowship Fund for Biotechnology & Food Engineering.
Mr. Klein was known throughout the ATS/Technion community as a role model of volunteer leadership and fundraising for two generations. The Technion recognized Mr. Klein for his longtime support with an honorary fellowship and honorary doctorate. The university also named the prestigious “Philip E. Klein Awards to Students on the President’s List” in his honor.
Together with his late wife Harriet, Mr. Klein was a Technion Guardian, having achieved the highest level of commitment. His son, Michael, is a graduate of the ATS 21st Century Leadership Development Program and serves on the Baltimore and National Boards of Directors.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his sister Frances Copeland; his sons Michael, Jeffrey and David; his grandchildren Daniel, Jennifer, Maria, Stephanie, Rachel, Rick and Linda; and his great-grandchildren.
Sincerely,
American Society for Technion-Israel Institute of Technology
