Win-Win Day

It was a win-win day.

After a nor’easter left Maryland soggy most of last week, the sun peeked through Sunday morning.

With that, some 3,000 people came to Northwestern High School, spent the day watching flag football, eating hot dogs, cotton candy and popcorn, riding ponies, listening to speeches and presentations, climbing a rock wall and bouncing to the moon.

On top of that, the Police Department landed a helicopter, brought out its high tech anti-crime and anti-terrorism vehicles.

Over $22,000 was raised for the benefit of the Baltimore City Police Department’s Mounted Unit. The unit is the oldest, continuous group of its kind in the nation. It was founded in 1988.

The Shomrim football team won for the second year in a row, defeating the Police Department’s team, 24-21.

Shomrim, the all-volunteer public safety organization supporting the work of the City and County Police Departments in Upper Park Heights and Pikesville, planned and organized the day’s activities along with Mayor Sheila Dixon’s office and Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld’s office.

Companies such as Advanced Business Systems, Boost Mobile and Sprint, along with the Jewish Times, the Baltimore Jewish Council, CHAI, O’Fishel Caterers, Tov Pizza and many other organizations helped sponsor the day.

Children played on the rides and rode the ponies while an intense football game happened in the Northwestern High School stadium. Last year, Shomrim’s team won, 40-13.

Baltimore City Orphans Court Judge Chaya Friedman served as the afternoon’s emcee. Mayor Dixon spoke to the enthusiastic crowd at half time. There were honor guards, a drum line and a deejay. Shomrim presented Commissioner Bealefeld with a check for the mounted police unit.

Elected officials including Baltimore City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Councilwoman Rochelle “Rikki” Spector, and Del. Sandy Rosenberg were there for much of the afternoon.

“Today’s friendly competition highlights the collaboration and partnership of efforts between the Baltimore City Police Department and Shomrim to keep the citizens of the Northwest District safe and secure,” said Mayor Dixon. “I want to thank Shomrim and Boost Mobile for their donations towards the Baltimore Police Department’s Mounted Unit.”

Shomrim vice president Ronnie Rosenbluth said, “today underscored Shomrim’s commitment to the community and the Police Department and the City of Baltimore. We want to thank everyone who came out today. It was a great day.”
