Craft: Almond Tree

Have your children celebrate the “Birthday of the trees” by making this Tu B’Shevat shekaydia tree (almond tree), created by Talia Berkowitz and Margie Ely, preschool teachers at Beth El. It’s a great project to work on during a cold winter weekend. You can then introduce your children to almonds, by making one of the iNSIDER recipes that use this delicious nut, or bake one of your own favorites.

1. Put brown paint on your children’s forearms and green paint on their hands.

2. Place their arms or hands on a large piece of paper with their fingers spread apart to make a print. (As an alternative, have your children trace their hands and forearms on the paper.)

3. Glue cotton balls onto the tree. These will be the almond blossoms.

4. Pour a little pink paint on a paper plate. Have your children dip a finger in it and dab the cotton balls.

5. Cut a strip of green paper to represent grass. Glue it onto the bottom of the paper.

6. Decorate the scene, adding sun and sky, with crayons or markers.
