Herman Maril: An American Modernist

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of Baltimore native and artist Herman Maril, the Walters Art Museum will present “Herman Maril: An American Modernist.”?

Opening June 28, the exhibit will feature 26 of his seascapes, landscapes and still lifes, many of which were painted in Baltimore and on Cape Cod, Mass.

Maril, a graduate of the Maryland Institute College of Art, initially painted in the Social Realist style. Later, his work evolved into that of a semi-abstract painter, influenced by the art of Mark Rothko and Milton Avery. Much of his work focused on his perceptions of the environment.

Included in the exhibit is his six-foot painting “Near Chama No. 2, New Mexico,” which is part of the Walter’s permanent collection.

Thirty Seconds With Laura Reames

I am a part-time accountant with Notre Dame College of Maryland, 1986 graduate of Westminster High School, 1990 graduate of Tufts University. I received my MBA and master’s in accounting from Northeastern University in 1993.

I volunteer: as the treasurer of Hadassah of Greater Baltimore. It’s important to support the activities you believe in.

My Favorite:
Book:
Anything by Agatha Christie
Movie: “Casablanca”
Food: Trader Joe’s dark chocolate bar with almonds
What people don’t know about me: I took improv comedy classes for quite a few years.
If I had more time I would: Travel more.
Craziest travel experience: I was stuck on the island of Cos in Greece and they wouldn’t let us leave. We couldn’t take a charter flight out since we had been to Turkey. We were literally kicked off the plane.
This summer: I will go to the pool with my son and run in (the Sizzling Summer Series).

Dining with… Nick Liston

Nick Liston grew up in Annapolis, where he was a member of Temple Beth Shalom in Arnold, Md. Interested in cooking, he received a culinary arts degree from Anne Arundel Community College.

Today he is the general manager at Si Salsa, the new Mexican-American restaurant located in Pomona Square. At the restaurant, Liston says he likes to create menu items that veer away from traditional Tex-Mex cooking, putting a Latino infusion on American dishes.

Although he spends his days at the restaurant, Liston still enjoys cooking for his friends. “I’m the first on the list to call to make something,” he says.

This Canton resident is a big fan of barbeques and in-home parties. He also likes to use what’s fresh and seasonal in his recipes.

Liston shares this lamb recipe with iNSIDER.

The Scenic Route: A Novel By Binnie Kirshenbaum
Harper Perennial, paperback, 2009, 352 pages, $13.99

This summer, author Binnie Kirshenbaum takes us on a road trip to Europe, when Sylvia Landsman, divorced and recently unemployed, flees to Italy. After meeting married, middle-aged expatriate Henry Stafford, the two take off on a grand tour of the continent—using his wife’s money.

Throughout the meandering road trip, in Eastern and Western Europe, Landsman, a cynical Jewish New Yorker, regales Stafford with tales of her family history.

Publisher’s Weekly gives “The Scenic Route: A Novel,” a starred review, calling it “a beguiling narrative-by-digression, a love story-cum family history-cum confession of sins.”
