Bruce Weinstein

Coming to Town

Jewish cookbook author Bruce Weinstein will stop by the 14th annual Baltimore Book Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m. to talk about his new book, “Cooking Know-How” (Wiley), which he co-authored with his peer, Mark Scarbrough. The two chefs will offer visitors cooking tips on their classic dishes.

“Cooking Know-How,” which has been praised by Martha Stewart and National Public Radio, features easy-to-understand steps, accompanied by photos. Following each recipe or technique, there are eight additional recipes for similar ideas. For example, after learning how to make enchiladas, the authors feature eight enchilada recipes.

The Baltimore Book Festival will be held in the Mt. Vernon area, Sept. 25-27. The festival is free.

Lisa Diamond and Quiche

Dining with… Lisa Diamond

As the high holidays approach, people are scouring their kitchens for delicious and simple recipes the whole family can enjoy together. Lisa Diamond says her mushroom onion quiche is perfect not only for the holidays, but for any meal in any season.

“It’s a quick and easy side dish. It can really be used as a base recipe for any kind of quiche you’re in the mood to cook,” she says. Diamond, who lives in Pikesville and has two young children, says the quiche is perfect for the whole family because you can change up the ingredients so easily to fit different tastes.

“You could add broccoli, zucchini or spinach, to name a few,” she says. “I continue to experiment with different ingredients to make interesting quiches that can go with each meal.”

Good for the Jews by Debra Spark

ON BOOKSHELVES

Good for the Jews by Debra Spark
University of Michigan Press, hardcover, 2009, 280 pages, $24

“Good for the Jews,” the newest novel from author Debra Spark, features comedy, mystery, romance and even a bit of Jewish history.

The novel, which is loosely based on the Book of Esther, centers on Ellen Hirschorn and her cousin Mose, a teacher who raised Ellen and her sister after their parents died in a car crash. When a new principal is hired at the school where Mose teaches, he is verbally harassed and begins receiving hate mail. Convinced it’s because he is Jewish, Mose asks Ellen for help, but she is conflicted because of her recent engagement to the superintendent of the school.

Despite the more serious themes of hatred and stereotypes, humor, love and family are at the center of the book’s story.
