Mitzvah Day Extravaganza Approaches

0

Mitzvah Day is approaching! Starting next Tuesday, Dec. 24 until Wednesday, Dec. 25, more than 1,000 volunteers will participate in activities around the Baltimore region to benefit the community.

Now in its 14th year, the Jewish Volunteer Connection (JVC) will work together on behalf of the community Christmas Day. Together, they will assemble winter care packages, make fleece blankets, decorate cards for veterans, create flash cards for Ashkelon and Odessa and prepare peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and bagged meals for the hungry. Items will be distributed to individuals in homeless shelters in Baltimore City and County. In addition, throughout the afternoon, volunteers will serve holiday dinner at shelters throughout Baltimore, according to a press release by Ruth Anne Pippenger, director of agency marketing at the Associated: Jewish Federation of Baltimore.

Interested participants can register to volunteer at jvcbaltimore.org/mitzvahday.

There will be volunteer opportunities for every age, interest and ability in the ever-expanding Mitzvah Rooms at both JCCs. In addition, each JCC location will offer a sensory room with select service projects which is new this year.

Volunteers are expected to assemble and deliver more than 2,000 care packages of winter essentials (hand-knitted scarves and hats by local community members, gloves, toiletries, snacks, etc.) to local homeless shelters.

JVC is a program of The Associated. JVC matches volunteers with hands-on service projects throughout Baltimore. Each year, the organization helps volunteers to give back at area schools, shelters, hospitals, synagogues and organizations throughout Baltimore. Mitzvah Day is among JVC’s largest annual events. Mitzvah Day is an exceptional day of volunteerism, community activism and unity.

Prior to the event, those with questions can contact Pippenger at 410-369-9281, or [email protected]

The next major volunteer day will be MLK Day of Service, Jan. 19 and Monday Jan. 20.
