Celebrate Sukkot

If you hear the sound of hammering, it may be from the sukkahs that are being built all over town at synagogues and homes in preparation for the upcoming observation of Sukkot, which this year runs from the evening of Oct. 4 to the evening of Oct. 11.

While synagogues across the area are holding Sukkot services and outdoor dinners in their sukkahs, listed here is a selection of Sukkot celebrations and events in and around the Baltimore-metro area.


>> Oct. 4: Temple Oheb Shalom in Baltimore holds Baby Boomer Happy Hour in the Hut at 5 p.m. templeoheb shalom.org.

>> Oct. 4: Har Sinai Congregation in Owings Mills holds Pizza in the Hut: Congregational Dinner in the Sukkah from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. harsinai-md.org.

>> Oct. 5: Beth El Congregation in Pikesville holds Steak, Salmon, Suds & Schwartz in the Sukkah at 6:30 p.m. Rabbi Steve Schwartz will discuss his favorite beverage — beer! And Baltimore Sun reporter Mike Preston will talk about the Baltimore sports scene. $35 for Men’s Club members; $40 for nonmembers. Registration required. >> Oct. 6: Adat Chaim Synagogue in Owings Mills holds the Seymour Essrog Memorial Service and Lecture at 7:30 p.m. adatchaim.com.

>> Oct. 7: Baltimore Hebrew Congregation in Baltimore holds NEXTGEN: Java in the Hut from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. baltimorehebrew.org.

>> Oct. 8, 9 and 10: Charm City Tribe holds its Mobile Sukkah Tour, with stops on Oct. 8 at The Charmery (a family-friendly location with etrog-flavored ice cream), 801 W. 36th St. in Hampden, noon to 3 p.m.; on Oct. 9 at R. >> Oct. 8: Beth Tfiloh Congregation in Pikesville holds its Sukkahfest: The Sukkot Block Party from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. with rides, carnival food, a craft fair, a silent auction, a Simchat Torah and crafts projects. There will be a Chasidic dancing group. Registration required. bethtfiloh.com.

>> Oct. 8: Beth Israel Congregation in Owings Mills holds Pizza in the Hut from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a pre-Ravens game tailgate with the Cow and inflatables in the sukkah. >> Oct. 8: Chizuk Amuno in Pikesville holds its Sukkot Fall Festival with Characters in the Sukkah from 11:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m and Lunch in the Sukkah at 12:15 p.m. There will be games (bring your softball gear), music, a moon bounce, arts and crafts, service projects for all ages and beer for adults. Bring travel-size toiletries to benefit those in need. Fees are $5 per person and $18 per family before Oct. 3 and $6 per person and $20 per family at the door. Children 3 and under are free.
