Ner Tamid Sets Trip to Museum of Jewish Heritage in NY

Ner Tamid – Greenspring Valley Synagogue is gearing up for a bus trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage — A Living Memorial to the Holocaust in New York City.

In the past, long-time Ner Tamid congregant Max Jacob would lead an annual trip to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. But Jacob died in November of 2018. Now the congregation is taking a trip in his memory this year to the New York museum to see its new exhibit, “Auschwitz: Not Long Ago. Not Far Away.”

Jacob was a “survivor of six camps, a survivor of typhoid, a survivor of Communist rule in Romania, a survivor of starting from scratch in a new country, a survivor of losing a larger-than-life older brother, a survivor of losing his beloved wife and a survivor of cancer, said Rabbi Yisrael “Sruli” Motzen, spiritual leader of Ner Tamid, in Jacob’s eulogy. “Max Jacob wasn’t just a person — Max was an icon. He represented to all of us what it means to be a Jew; what it means to live a committed and dedicated life; what it means to care for family no matter what; what it means to be a leader; what it means to be a mench; what it means to be a mentor; and what it means to be a friend. And those lessons are forever ours to cherish and to be inspired from.”

The Museum of Jewish Heritage trip is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 4, one week before Tisha B’Av, leaving Ner Tamid at 8 a.m. and returning about 9:30 p.m. Cost for the trip is $50 per person, which includes the round-trip bus transportation, tickets to the museum and Auschwitz exhibit, a light breakfast and a box dinner on the bus.

The bus is expected to fill up quickly. Register at nertamid.net by July 26. For more information, contact Elliot Jacob at 301-520-4866, or email [email protected] Sponsorship opportunities are available. The trip is being sponsored by the Burstyn and Jacob Family Holocaust Memorial Funds, but additional sponsors are needed.
