Caroline Esther Goldsmith, beloved mother of Heidi Goldsmith, Joy Goldsmith, Sharon Goldsmith (Hamburger), and Fred Goldsmith; grandmother to David and Yael Hamburger, and SFC Daniel Goldsmith (IAF); mother-in-law to Coos Hamburger, passed away in her home town Baltimore, Maryland.

Beautiful inside and out, Caroline lived her life deeply and joyously, using all her senses. Family, Repairing the World (“tikkun olam”), her Jewish heritage, learning, and nature were the central passions of her life.

Her home was warm and welcoming to family, friends, and strangers. A graduate of Goucher College, she taught high school till the birth of her first child. Later in life she earned a Master’s degree in Pastoral Counseling at Loyola University.

She was a volunteer and board member at the Franciscan Center soup kitchen for decades and at the Women In Self Help hotline. She loved travel, including a safari in Kenya for her 60th birthday.

A strong role model for her children and grandchildren, she leaves a legacy of goodness, idealism, and creativity.

Caroline was predeceased by her husband of 50 years Dr. Henry Goldsmith, brother Judge Robert I.H. Hammerman, and parents Herman and Belle Hammerman.

Contributions in her memory may be sent to MAZON – A Jewish Response to Hunger, PO Box 6095, Albert Lea, MN 56007; Magen David Adom, 20 West 36th Street, Suite 1100, New York, NY 10018 or the charity of your choice.
