In 2017 Maryland resident Herta Griffel Baitch was surprised to learn that a strong box was found by researchers at USHMM that included some of her artwork that she created in first grade at a school in Vienna. Not long after first grade, Herta was forced to leave her family behind and she escaped to America, where she was eventually adopted by a Baltimore family. In 2018 another surprise would come, having been under the impression that she was the only survivor from her school, a second survivor Ruth Weiner spotted a photo of herself in a class picture. In this presentation these two amazing women will come together to discuss their memories and discuss the importance of their work today.
