Destination weddings might seem glamorous: the exotic location, maybe an unknown language, excitement and activities, but they come with a lot of downsides too. Destination weddings often mean added expenses for guests, can be more difficult to plan from afar and can be more expensive for the bride and groom as well. Here are some of our favorite “staycation” wedding venues in Baltimore that, though close to home offer an escape and exciting flair to any wedding event.
Located less than 10 minutes from both I-83 and I-695, the location and ease of access could hardly be better. But once you’re on the property, you’d be hard pressed to know you’re just a few minutes from two major interstates. In spring and summer, gigantic blooming trees and bushes dot the landscape. No matter the weather, the architecture and interior of the mansion and surrounding buildings is to-die-for. Tudor architecture makes for a romantic outdoor setting while lush tapestries and carpets inside will make your day magical. There are plenty of opportunities for ethereal photoshoots from the old-timey carriage house to the well-coiffed landscaping to the verdant forests along the edge of the property.
Grey Rock Mansion
Take a step back in time and get married surrounded by history at Grey Rock Mansion, the historic estate where, in 1752, one of Maryland’s founders, Colonel John Eager Howard—Maryland’s fifth, sixth and seventh, governor—was born. The modern mansion was built in 1858 and remains majestic with ornate indoor rooms, romantic chandeliers and draping in a large tent and an outdoor ceremony garden with a gazebo and fountain.
Situated in Monkton, just 35 minutes from the heart of Baltimore City, this old school estate could hardly be more removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. You and your guests will enter the property along a long tree-covered way and catch your first glimpse of the 127 acres of horse pasture and the Estate at Foxfire, built in 1932. The manor and guest house sleep up to 21 guests, while the venue itself can hold up to 300 guests. With a stunningly updated modern-chic farmhouse interior and plenty of opportunities to meet the horses, Foxfire offers the experience of a lifetime.
American Visionary Art Museum
Feeling artsy? The American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM) may be the place for you. America’s national museum for self-taught artists, AVAM is filled to bursting with unique and outrageous artwork that can provide the perfect backdrop for your wedding. Consider getting married on the gigantic winding staircase, or beneath the hot air balloon installation piece. Take pictures inside and out with wacky installations or the giant neon letters spelling “LOVE” on the outside of the building.
