On May 8, 2018, Barbara Levy Gradet; cherished wife of Howard Gradet; loving mother of Alex Gradet and Regan Gradet Chagal; dear sister of Laurence Levy; dear grandmother of two; devoted daughter of the late Joyce and Morris (Chick) Levy. Mrs. Gradet began her career as a clinical social worker, later moving into administrative fields. She obtained her master’s in social work in 1979 and in 1988, became director of Baltimore County’s Department of Aging. Ten years later, she was appointed director of the Department of Social Services. Her time there won praise from state and county officials when she resigned in 2004. In 2004, she joined Jewish Family Services of Baltimore, which later became known as the Jewish Community Services. Mrs. Gradet and her husband had a time share in Hawaii, and traveled extensively, visiting 22 countries on six continents. Aside from work and travel, Mrs. Gradet was an extra — or supernumerary — in several productions of the Baltimore Opera, along with her husband and children. According to a 1994 article in The Sun, she donned 10 pounds of synthetic fur for a production of “Norma.” She also enjoyed singing and performed for eight years with a group called the Showtime Singers — mostly seniors who performed monthly in nursing home facilities in the area. Services at SOL LEVINSON & BROS., INC., 8900 Reisterstown Road, at Mount Wilson Lane on Thursday, June 28, at 4 pm.   1. Barbara was a wonderful person well in keeping with with the exemplary leadership of the JFCS. She died too young and will be missed.
