HBO honors victims and rescuers this Yom Hashoah with the screening of a new documentary by journalist Steven Pressman. The film, “Fifty Children: The Rescue Mission of Mr. and Mrs. Kraus” is based on a previously hidden memoir written by Eleanor Kraus of Philadelphia.
The memoir, which came into Kraus’ granddaughter and Pressman’s wife Liz Pearle’s hands in 2002, tells the story of Kraus and her husband Gilbert’s successful efforts to rescue 50 Viennese Jewish children by enabling their immigration to the U.S. just prior to the beginning of World War II. “Fifty Children,” which features the voices of Alan Alda and Mamie Gummer and is presented in association with the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, will premiere on April 8.
