The streets of the South soon will be alive with the sounds ofshmoozing and revving engines as hundreds of Jewish motorcyclists pour into Savannah, Ga. for the recently announced Fifth Ride To Remember (R2R).
The annual event, this year from May 14-17, seeks to promote the Holocaust through “remembrance and education, to assure that history will not repeat itself,” according to the Jewish Motorcyclist Association. Donations from the riders will be used for Holocaust education programs in Savannah and Charleston, S.C.
The riders will take a 110-mile cruise up to Charleston, S.C. on Friday, May 15, using the “beautiful back roads of Georgia and South Carolina to the Charleston Holocaust Memorial.” After lunch and a ceremony, they will head back to Savannah for a Shabbat evening banquet, scheduled for 8 p.m.
The bikers are invited to Friday night Shabbat services at Mickve Israel, which is about a 10-minute walk from their hotel.
Organizers stress that the R2R is open to both motorcyclists affiliated with a member club and those who are not.
Partners for the event include the Jewish Federations of Savannah and Charleston, and Rabbi Arnold Belzer of Mickve Israel, the third oldest synagogue in the country.
