The opposition to the Wagner-Rogers Bill epitomizes the mass, irrational and prejudicial thinking of many Americans (“When Jewish Children Were the Ones Being Separated,” July 20).
Just think, a generation or two before 1938 most of those protesting the allowance of these children access to America were also immigrants or children of immigrants seeking a better life in America. And what did many of the early immigrant relatives of these protesters do? They went to war and killed or dehumanized the longstanding native Americans who had occupied the great expanse of the Americas for nearly 30,000 years before Columbus ever dreamed of sailing west or the later immigrants ever reached our shores. Think of the creativity that was lost by denying these children admission!
